MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE and NEW WORLD ORDER
MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE and NEW WORLD ORDER
By Harold Pinter
National Institute of Dramatic Art, Graduating Directors 2006
Mountain Language deals with the desperate assertion of individual freedom and identity in the face of oppressive brutality. It is about the dignity, the courage and the will of those people who refuse to submit to terror and who refuse to be silenced. In this hostile landscape prisoners and their families are forbidden to speak their own language and must only use “the language of the capital”. A frightening reminder of the harsh reality of modern society and of the individuals isolated and powerless within State controlled regimes. At the heart of this is an attack on social structures that seek to deprive individual human rights and freedoms, prioritising the interests of a few and ignoring less tangible and less valued concepts such as justice, morality, community and tolerance.
