In 3 Winters, Tena Štivičić, provides a wonderfully rich glimpse into her country’s history. We follow one family with scenes anchored around a single house. Action leaps between 1945, 1990 and 2011; a homecoming, a funeral, a wedding. The Kos families’ evolving attitudes towards Croatian conflicts and changing political systems, from Communism to Capitalism, is at the heart of the work.

Property is as political as it is emotional, and decisions about who stays, who goes tear at the moral fibre down the generations.

Štivičić was born in Yugoslavia, grew up in the new Croatia and now lives in London; her great-grandmother was a maid in a grand house who was shunned when she fell pregnant and was ostracised. She drew on her own experience and on family history for 3 Winters.
